Encountering Europe through the Lens of Social Science

The KULeuven-Illinois Experience:
Encountering Europe through the Lens of Social Science

New application deadline for fall 2012: April 1, 2012

Program at a glance
In collaboration with Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), the University of Illinois has developed a study abroad program in Leuven, Belgium that provides you with unique intercultural learning opportunities in the social sciences. European and US students participate in common classes and curriculum as you explore the social and demographic transitions that accompany and underpin globalization. All students enroll in a core course on population and family dynamics from a life course perspective. To complement the core course, you select courses from several academic pathways, ranging from social science-specific specializations to a broader academic experience across the humanities, arts, science, and business. You can study abroad on the KULeuven-Illinois Experience during fall or spring semester.

Illinois for Illinois (I4I) and International Programs and Studies (IPS) Study Abroad Undergraduate Scholarships

The final deadline to apply for scholarships for study abroad programs during Spring Break 2012, Summer 2012, Fall Semester 2012, and Academic Year 2012-2013 is coming up on February 3, 2012. The application is available through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, closing at midnight.

Last semester, approximately 1 in 3 applicants received an I4I Scholarship. Recipients receive $500 for a short-term study abroad program, $1,000 for a semester-length study abroad program, and $2,000 for a year-long study abroad program. Students can apply in the categories of financial need, underrepresented student, general merit, and nontraditional destination.

Study Abroad Summer 2012 - Faculty-Led Programs, Apps Due Feb 10

Discuss what you want to study and where you want to go with your parents this weekend, and then start your application!  There's still plenty of time!

Click on the link below or open the attachment to check out our 2012 spring/summer and summer lineup!  There are 9 LAS/SAO sponsored programs, 1 FAA/SAO sponsored program (ARTH 441), and 1 EDU/SAO sponsored program (CI 499 or CI 507).  After you click on the link you will see several links that will take you to the respective program brochure page where you can find out more detailed information about the program.  The program brochure page is where you start your application.

Spring/Summer and Summer Faculty-Led Programs

Final Application Deadline: February 10, 2012

Don't let the application process intimidate you.  It's very easy!  The only materials (3 total) that need to be turned into room 112 of the Study Abroad Office are highlighted below.  The rest of the application can be completed online!

Required materials:
*Signature Verification Form (downloadable from your online application)
*Official Illinois transcript (escrips are accepted for SAO-sponsored faculty-led courses abroad).  Please send escrips to sao@illinois.edu.
*Photocopy of passport or receipt as proof of purchase or renewal.  If you submit a receipt as proof of purchase or renewal of your passport then we will not be able to check off the photocopy of your passport, but if all other pieces of your application are complete then we will consider your application complete.  The reason we will not check off the photocopy of your passport if you submitted a receipt is because we still want to have a way to track who has not yet turned in a copy of their passport, and then we are able to send you reminders to turn it in once you do receive it.

Short-term, faculty-led courses abroad are designed to maximize student learning opportunities and to make every moment count.  According to research conducted by the University of Delaware's Center for International Studies (IIE Networker, spring 2004), students who have spent even two or three weeks studying in another country report a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures and customs, a heightened awareness of their country's identity and place on the world stage, and a better idea of what is required to be a "global citizen."
