Queer Prom

Saturday, April 28th, four student organizations affiliated with the LGBT Resource Center; Pride, Women of Pride, Building Bridges, and oSTEM; are working together to plan a Formal Queer Community event: Prom, from which the proceeds will be donated to help fund programs for runaway LGBT youth.  The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Urbana (1001 West Killarney Street  Urbana, IL 61801).  Doors open at 6:00, and dinner will be served promptly at 7:00.  During dinner we have entertainment lined up including stand-up comedy and performances by drag queens.  After dinner, a DJ will play music and we will dance the night away.  The theme 'Marry the Night' is a play on current marriage equality politics, a tribute to the queer community's biggest celebrity supporter, and embracing the time of day when we show our true colors.  Tickets will be $30 per person, and the dress is semi-formal. Appreciate Your Body Bulletin Board

LGBT Resource Center. 323 Illini Union
By: Justin Henderson, M.S. & Jackie Beard, M.S. Counseling Center & Sexual Orientation Diversity Allies (SODA)
Description: The bulletin board’s purpose is to bring awareness of body image concerns among lesbian, gay, and bisexual students. The pursuit of positive body image requires that each one of us take the time to appreciate our bodies. This passive program hopes to raise students’ perceptions of body image concerns while also encouraging students to appreciate and accept their bodies. The bulletin board is plastered with negative, critical self-statements about how we often feel and think about our bodies. The goal is to cover these messages with more affirming and loving statements.
Instructions: Think about something that you appreciate, accept, and/or love about your body. Please write a word, phrase, or sentence on the hearts provided. For instance, you could write, “I have a nice smile.” Make sure to write it large enough to read. Then tack the heart over the negative self-talk messages on the board.

Bridges

Bridges is a low-cost, process-oriented psychotherapy group for transgender adults across the spectrum of gender expression and identity, from those who are only just beginning to question their gender to those who have been living as their true self for quite some time.
The primary goal of the group is to offer a safe space for reflection, exploration, growth, and support. Though the group often focuses on issues especially relevant to the trans community-- such as “coming out,” transitioning and other forms of gender expression, coping with oppression, and forming satisfying relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners-- the focus of the group is determined by the members and is thus open to other topics (e.g. depression, anxiety, shyness, etc.) that are not necessarily related to gender.
The group meets weekly in the Champaign-Urbana area at a private location with access to dressing rooms. For more information, please contact Chris Murdock-Jordan, M.A. or Dr. Lori Davis at 217-398-8888.

Film Screening & Evening w Marriage Equality Activist Charlene Strong

Film Screening: "For My Wife"
2 pm. Friday, September 30, 2011.
LGBT Resource Center. 323 Illini Union

An Evening with Charlene Strong "Marriage Equality: It’s All About Equal Rights"
7:30 pm. Wednesday, October 5, 2011
Illini Union Ballroom. 1401 W Green Street
URBANA, IL - On Wednesday, October 5, 2011, the LGBT Resource Center, Illini Union Board and Women of Pride will host Charlene Strong.  Ms. Strong will discuss "Marriage Equality: It's All About Equal Rights".  The lecture will begin at 7:30 pm in the Ballroom of the Illini Union on the second floor.
Charlene Strong is an advocate for equality and was instrumental in passing Washington State’s landmark laws on domestic partnerships, the first in US history to be upheld.  After the tragic death of her partner and suffering the injustice of discrimination against same-sex domestic partners in the eyes of the law, Charlene started her path as a gay rights activist.  With no legal protection for same sex couples in Washington state at the time, Charlene had to seek permission from an out-of-state family member for her to be by her dying partner’s side. Her experience while trying to make the funeral arrangements only added insult to the discrimination she endured at the hospital. Charlene testified a month later in front of the Washington state legislature, and her testimony was critical in helping to pass landmark domestic partnership legislation in the state.
Ms. Strong has helped many organizations raise funds and awareness and has the ability to find the message in her speech that resonates with all ages.  Her depth of passion and humor also help her to covey the importance and support that all families and individuals should expect in our country.  Not only has Charlene worked on behalf of family rights in her state, she believes strongly that her story is an American story that anyone can understand.  As an American who believes strongly in the rights that all citizens are created equal, Charlene’s passion makes her an excellent communicator that inspires others to add their voices as advocates for change.
"For My Wife" the award winning documentary chronicling Ms. Strong's activism will be screened on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 2 pm.  The film will be shown at the LGBT Resource Center, room 323 Illini Union.
Charlene Strong’s visit is sponsored by the LGBT Resource Center, the Illini Union Board, Women of Pride, SORF and the Student Cultural Programing Fee. The LGBT Resource Center, a unit of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, works to foster an environment that is open, safe and inclusive for people of all sexualities and gender identities.
