CWL 151 Cross-Cultural Thematics: Queer Literature
Fall 2012 (MWF 12-12:50)
Instructor: Chase Dimock
This course explores the role of sexuality in 19th and 20th century literature from around the globe and reviews the work of both canonical and overlooked LGBT authors. We will also compare the scientific, political, and cultural constructions of sexuality and gender from across nations and focus on how queer communities and identities developed in different historical and social contexts. Some of the topics to be covered will include: sexology and early psychological models of homosexuality in the 19th century, queer expatriate narratives, sexuality during the Nazi regime, the history of drag performance, queer writers of the Harlem Renaissance, the Stonewall uprising and the birth of the gay rights movement, and modern queer theory.
